What is a Chaffle?
A chaffle is a savory keto-friendly, low-carb waffle that is made with just 3 ingredients(+ toppings!), is only 1g net carb per waffle(!!!), and is such a great breakfast to batch cook and reheat during the week!
This low carb keto chaffle recipe is basic in steps and ingredients, but offers endless options for added flavors, sweet or savory! Even my kids love the chaffle!
How to Make a Keto Chaffle
This may sound crazy, but it totally works! Chaffles taste like super crispy, cheesy waffles, but with such a mild flavor that you could drench it in syrup and not even know the difference!
I love using mozzarella cheese since it’s mild tasting, so it leaves the waffle more neutral-tasting and ready for whichever toppings you choose!
Ingredient Notes
Cheese: I prefer shredded mozzarella because it has the most neutral flavor, but you could also use shredded cheddar, shredded Mexican blend, etc.
Almond Flour: You could substitute almond meal for almond flour. I would NOT recommend substituting coconut flour.
Tree Nut Free: I haven’t tried it, but you should be able to use 2 teaspoons coconut flour in place of the 2 tablespoons of almond flour. Coconut flour takes a bit to absorb, so I’d let the batter sit for 5 minutes so it can thicken properly.
Dairy Free: Sadly, I’m not sure this would work with a dairy free shredded cheese, such as Daiya. I don’t think these can be made dairy free. If you think of a way to make them dairy free please share in the comments!
The Best Waffle Maker
I love this waffle iron because I can make up to 4 chaffles at once, and the chaffles/waffles are the perfect size to fit in a toaster oven to reheat.
This recipe is for just 2 chaffles. Double if you want to make 4. Some people really like using a Dash mini waffle iron, but I really love the ease of meal prep with the bigger waffle maker.

Here are some fun ideas to play around with the change up the flavor profiles of your keto Chaffle!
Pumpkin Spice Chaffles: canned pumpkin, cinnamon & pumpkin pie spice.
Blueberry Chaffles: fresh blueberries, cinnamon, monkfruit sweetener.
Chocolate Chaffles: cacao powder, dark chocolate chips, monkfruit sweetener.
Spinach Chaffles: add in a handful of raw chopped spinach, shredded cheddar cheese.
Maple Bacon Chaffles: keto friendly maple syrup, chopped cooked bacon.
Pizza Chaffles: pizza sauce, pepperoni.
Avocado Toast Chaffle: mashed avocado, sliced tomatoes, olive oil, everything but the bagel seasoning.
Expert Tips
Toppings: I love my keto chaffle topped with mashed avocado and some microgreens. It is literally the most perfect keto avocado toast I have had in my entire life. But really, the possibilities are kind of endless. I’m even dreaming of using these as sandwich bread. Or a bun for burgers. OMG it is really true love with this chaffle!
Texture: The texture is a super crisp exterior with a light and airy interior. Also, the almond flour helps give it a little more body and keeps it substantial. The egg gives it rise and those perfect bubbles you see, and the cheese helps it get crispy.
To get your keto chaffle extra crispy, which is of course my favorite, a waffle has to have CRISP, you want to let them cool fully on a wire rack. The wire rack prevents steam from accumulating on the bottom and causing soggy waffle bottoms. If you don’t let them cool, they’re a little more soft and eggy. Trust me. Let them cool a good 3-5 minutes and avoid temptation. It’s worth it.
Reheating: Best part? These freeze and reheat amazingly in the toaster! Just like eggo waffles. So you can easily batch cook a bunch and always have a speedy breakfast waiting for you in the freezer. I love this waffle iron, which makes waffles that fit in the toaster.

Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon almond flour
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- avocado oil spray

- Heat your waffle iron.
- In a small bowl, combine the egg, almond flour and mozzarella cheese. Whisk to combine.
- Spray the waffle iron with avocado oil spray. Add the batter to your waffle iron. Cook for 3-6 minutes, until the waffles are crispy.
- Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. They are the crispiest when they are allowed to fully cool.
- I love mine topped with mashed avocado and microgreens. But these are also surprisingly delicious topped with keto syrup and berries!

I’ve been waiting to make these for months! My friend gave me a waffle iron recently and I finally got my chance. So easy and yummy, I just need to figure out how much batter I pour in so it doesn’t spill out the sides.
I cracked some black pepper into the batter and used quesadilla cheese. Topped mine with avocado, tomato, Trader Joe’s romanesco sauce and a little TJs chili onion crunch. So good! My littles loved them too, I served theirs with a little side of maple syrup. My 3 yo told me was a little too much salt and pepper and next time he wants sweet waffles, but the he cleaned his plate and said it was delicious.
Now, to clean that waffle iron!

I made the recipe two ways. First…I’m allergic to eggs and almonds so I went with substitutes. Flax egg, sunflower seed flour, and regular mozzarella. Very crispy land much more of a cheese forward waffle. I actually really liked it this way.
Second try because I wanted to see the difference was with egg, sunflower seed flour, and mozzarella. This one was lighter, fluffy in comparison and much more egg forward. Like a cheese omelet in waffle form. I did not taste it but it looked and smelled great!

I’ve been dying to try this one but i don’t have a waffle maker! Just don’t have the space for one. Have you tried it as a pancake or another way to make it??
I haven’t recipe tested the chaffle without a waffle maker Judith. I really don’t think it would work well as a pancake cooked in a skillet. The best part of them is the crispiness. You could sure try it though. Let me know if it turns out well for you. I sure hope you like them.
