Ingredient Notes

ingredients to make low carb keto hot chocolate

Almond Milk: I prefer my super easy homemade almond milk, but store-bought works also. Use what you have! You can substitute any non-dairy milk of your choosing. Canned coconut milk is delicious too!

Cocoa Powder: I use Navitas Cacao powder (pictured above). This organic cacao powder has a richer chocolate taste and also has antioxidants! Regular cocoa powder often has fillers and added sugar, so make sure you check the label!

Monkfruit Sweetener: This is my go-to zero calories, zero carbs sweetener, but if you don’t need to keep it keto, you can use any sweetener of your choice. Maple syrup, coconut sugar, honey, or even regular sugar. Same quantity, or more to taste.

Kosher Salt: Just a pinch goes a long way!

The Secret Ingredient!

This hot chocolate is made with a very essential, secret ingredient that I didn’t find in other keto hot cocoas: Cocoa butter!

The cocoa butter adds a richness and silkiness that takes this hot chocolate over the top. Cocoa butter is the fat that is pressed out of the cocoa bean. It tastes like chocolate, even though it has no sweetness! If you don’t have cocoa butter, check out my tips below for a good substitution.

Recipe Step by Step

  1. Heat the almond milk and cocoa butter in a microwave-safe container for 3 minutes.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, monk fruit, and pinch of salt. (And peppermint extract if using) Whisk to combine. (Or combine them in a blender over low speed)
  3. Serve warm, topped with coconut whipped cream.

Expert Tips

Making Smooth Hot Cocoa: To make sure the cocoa powder gets blended fully, I like to combine the ingredients in the blender over low speed for just 30 seconds.

Cocoa Butter: If you don’t have cocoa butter, you can substitute coconut oil. Use refined coconut oil if you don’t like the taste of coconut. Same quantity.

Chocolate Garnish: I shaved on some Lily’s keto dark chocolate bar on top as a garnish.
