Five Things for Friday
1. We had our first free weekend this summer! No weddings. No nothing. What did we do? We decide to dig up our backyard so we can start laying a brick patio. Did I mention it was over 100 degrees over the weekend? Because it was. And did you know that if you want to lay a brick patio, you have to dig at least 8 inches deep? I kept begging Shawn to fire me so I could go watch TV. No luck. But we did get everything dug up and level, about 150 wheel barrel trips full of dirt later. Digging dirt is haaaaard. Can’t wait to lay the brick this weekend!
2. We kept the dogs inside while we were digging, because they kept coming up close while we were digging. Didn’t want to worry about hitting them with a shovel. We kept them inside, and Max and Lou kept a very close eye on us the whole time. I don’t think they can stand the thought of being alone. #dogprison
3. Along with our new brick patio, our bakyard is going to need some lights! Shawn and his brother Byron hung some of those globe outdoor string lights for us, running from the tree to the house. We didn’t have a ladder, but that’s no problem for these fellas. They just climbed those trees like monkeys. Love our new outdoor lights!
4. Remember how I wrote about having unlimited email and website browsing on our satellite internet plan earlier this week? Welp, after reading that post, Shawn told me that we in fact do NOT have unlimited email and website browsing. I was confusing that with another internet provider that was more than twice the price. The 10 gigs we have is for e-very-thing. Must have missed that memo. Thank goodness we’re grandfathered in to “unlimited data” on our AT&T iPhones. We plug them in to our TV whenever we want to watch Netflix or rent a movie off iTunes. An obnoxious extra step, but saves us buttloads in data usage.
5. Ok friends. You know those recipe videos I’ve been posting? The final product looks all organized and professional (I hope), but if you could only hear the dialogue that is going on in the background as Shawn is filming them, you would probably die of laughter. Usually when we are filming these, we’re exhausted from long days of work, and hungry for dinner. Aka, we have very short patience for each other, and get a little “snappy”. All with love! Kind of…
Remember that coconut lime rice video I posted on Tuesday? We were particularly fussy, and Shawn captured this gem of a conversation on film. This is exactly what we’re like when we’re in super crunchy moods. I secretly wanted to rip Shawn’s head off, but was trying to be as nice as I could. Can you tell?
Shawn was laughing so hard about putting my signature “ending” on the end of this video! Ha!
If you didn’t notice the first time, the first shot of rice (that we actually ended up using anyway, whatever) was totally out of focus. The hardest part of filming is keeping everything in tack sharp focus. I tried scooping the poured rice up out of the coconut oil to do 1 more attempt and it looked…well…as I so eloquently put it, like s***.
As Shawn was editing the video on Monday night, he was laughing so hard he was crying. I asked him what was so funny. He played me these clips, and I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. Hope you enjoy the laugh!

digging a patio sucks but you’ll be loving it once it’s done. And it’s always nice to know you did it all by yourself! Your video is funny! Isn’t marriage grand?
I hope all your outdoor work went well this weekend! How exciting! I love home and yard stuff.
Haha! I LOVE watching bloopers! I think that sometimes I enjoy them even more than the actual movie! Owning a house can be exhausting! When we first bought our house all I wanted to do was have a relaxing night, but it seemed like there was so much to do. Good luck with the brick patio, I bet it will be awesome when it is all finished, especially since you have two adorable supervisors :)
I just found your blog today and am chuckling because I too spent HOURS yesterday digging, digging, digging – though my digging was for a garden instead of a yard. :-) Can’t wait to see your finished product!
Nat, this video is so so so funny. You definitely should share more blooper videos. I can’t wait to see more pictures of your backyard. I am sure it will be beautiful when it’s all done. I hope you are having a great weekend, my friend :-)
Always love your Friday posts! The video is hilarious and you and your husband are so darn cute!

Ha! Nice. I love that you described your moods as “crunchy” in that video. Totally need to start using that. Good luck on the bricklaying this weekend! Very excited to see the finished project. As an HGTV fanatic, this gets me extremely excited!!! You guys are really cute together, btw ;) And the idea of some string lights sound like my kind of backyard oasis! Perfect for entertaining with some good eats and drinks :)
Hahahaha … more bloopers, please!!
Glad you got your Internet problem sorted, too. That is a pain with a capital P!
Hope you get your bricks laid this weekend!
How exciting to be doing some work on your new house, can’t wait to see pictures! I love the video bloopers, too cute. Sounds about like Josh and I when he’s trying to help me with blog stuff ;)
Haha, that is awesome! Only a food blogger can really appreciate that video. I can’t tell you how many times I have to redo something because it didn’t get capture right. Good luck with your patio. That is a huge project. I would have been begging to be fired :D
Haha love the outtakes video, you guys are so funny and cute at the same time :) Yay, sounds like your patio is coming along nicely, can’t wait to see pics once it’s all done! Hope you guys have a great weekend!
HILARIOUS!! That outtake is awesome. Love you even more for posting it! HAHA
I would love to see the blooper videos. Sometimes, when I am having a bad day I go on YouTube to look at bloopers of my favourite shows. It always cheers me up.
You guys are just the best! I totally want to come hang out when your new backyard is ready. Sounds like it’s going to be awesome! Cracking up over that video. My mom helped me with some photos a few weeks ago, like holding the reflector, and we were totally snapping at each other. So funny to see behind the scenes!
That video cracked me up! If I’m cooking something for the blog when I’m hangry/tired, that scene plays out in my kitchen quite frequently haha! And your backyard sounds like it will be AWESOME! I love lights strung from trees. I’m sure once you’re relaxing on your new patio with a glass of wine you’ll be thinking all of the hard work you two put in was well worth it. :) Enjoy your weekend!
Love the outtakes video! We’ve all been there, that’s for sure. My guy and I get quite snappy when we’re both starving and I’m too busy photographing our quickly-going-cold meal for the blog . . . I’ve taken to making sure he gets his plate and takes off for the living room while I take pictures of just my own serving. He’s extraordinarily patient, but I know that would get on the nerves of the saintliest person! :)
Yay for your coming patio! Digging in 100-degree heat does not sound like my idea of fun, and I laughed out loud at your mention that you hoped Shawn would fire you. Ha! I feel that way when Spencer gets going on projects and “needs my help,” too, hahaha . . . oh boy. Bad wife. But what can I say? I’m just . . . kind of lazy. And he’s a perfectionist . . . so isn’t it better if he makes sure everything gets done right the first time — himself? ;)
Bahaha that last video is hilarious. I’m happy you posted that raw material! Those videos as you know, I’m a HUGE fan of! But you make it look like a breeze to shoot and create! I love the beeps in the video ;) and I would probably think the same about mmhmm haha! Nice that you had a weekend off this sunmer. But your first, that’s crazy! Even though it was hot and you spent it working on the new house, I bet it was wonderful! So funny Shawn and his brother climbed the trees! I can imagine those lights looking adorable. Hope you have a wonderful weekend dear!
Love the outtakes, so funny! You would never know by how perfect your videos are. Yay for free time too! I hope you have another wonderful weekend, Natalie!
Happy Friday, Natalie! Sounds like your backyard will be gorgeous when it’s all finished! You’ll definitely have to share more pictures as you get them. And that video is hilarious! Bloopers are always so fun to watch. Have a great weekend!
Hahaha! Natalie, you should definitely share more blooper recipe vids with us! That one made me laugh—you sounded veeeeery annoyed with that darn rice. LOL. Seriously, though I would never have guessed from the finished product! You guys always end up with the most professional and organized videos! You and Shawn have an awesome weekend, Nat! :)
