What Makes This Recipe Great
One of my favorite things I ate over in Hawaii was this Tropical Mango Papaya Salsa. It was so delicious and addictive that I knew I had to recreate it at home. It tastes like Mexico and Hawaii had a baby and made this delicious fruit salsa. I can’t stop eating it!
I’ve made fruit salsas in the past using pineapple, but I always thought they turned out too watery and runny. Not good. After eating this mango and papaya salsa, a light bulb clicked. Of course, use less “watery” fruit like mango and papaya! Still sweet and tasty, but none of the extra moisture you get from pineapple.
This mango papaya fruit salsa is tasty on its own, served with some tortilla chips for an appetizer or snack, but is also amazing on fish tacos or mixed into salads!

Ingredient Notes
- Mango: You’ll want to make sure you have ripe mangoes for this recipe. They feel similar to an avocado when ripe, so keep that in mind when choosing one.
- Ripe Papaya: Make sure you are working with a ripe, juicy papaya before making this salsa.
- Jalapeno: Use more or less depending on your spice preference.
- Red onion
- Fresh cilantro
- Fresh lime juice: For extra brightness and flavor, feel free to add a but of lime zest if desired.
- Salt and pepper
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Remove the pit and slice the fruit into small cubes. Wash and chop all vegetables.
- Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and stir to combine.
- Store in the fridge for up to one week.
Expert Tips
- If you’ve never cut up a mango or papaya before, be sure to watch the recipe video to see how!
- If you’re using ripe fruit, there shouldn’t be any need for additional sweetener. However, you can use agave or honey to sweeten it if needed.
Serving Tips
Serve this delicious salsa by itself with tortilla chips on top of fish, as a condiment for tacos or burritos, or however else you love fruit salsa (I could eat it with a spoon!).
Storage Tips
Store leftover mango papaya salsa in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Leftovers will keep for up to 1 week.Â

haha only ok to die on the way home??? You’re too funny. Thank goodness it wasn’t as bad as the news projected. Such a surprise they were wrong, huh? Happy you had such a lovely time. I love Hawaii, it’s gorgeous, and that fruit. Ahhh I totally remember the fruit. SO yummy! Love that you were inspired by what you ate there to make this salsa. Makes it EXTRA special ;) I’ve never had papaya…I feel like there’s something wrong with me lol. That’s probably normal though for us Midwestern folks. Totally need to try this soon. Hope you are having a great week Natalie!!
So glad you had a good time on your trip, Natalie! It’s like you read my mind with this salsa. After I made mine, I thought I needed to make a sweeter one. This is perfect! Pinning this one :)

Oh, I’m so glad the weather held up and those hurricanes stayed far away — I never connected that you were going on vacation during those storms! Can’t wait to hear more about Hawaii, and this salsa looks fantastic!
So glad to see you’re back, Nat! I am a tad bit afraid of flying and can only imagine what you must have been feeling. The fact that so many tourists were staying away is awesome. I bet it made the trip that much more enjoyable. And I bet this salsa is too. I already can’t wait for Thursday to find out more ways to chow down on it ;)
I am so glad that your trip turned out great! I was thinking about you when I saw the news. This salsa looks like the perfect thing to make after returning from Hawaii. I’ll have to try it and pretend I’m there!

Oh my gosh, I would have been freaking out! I didn’t even make the connection when I heard about them coming and knew you guys were going. So glad it all worked out and you had a great time. I’ve only been to Hawaii once and it was awesome. “Mexico & Hawaii had a baby” = sold on this salsa!
Welcome back! So glad you guys avoided the hurricane and everything worked out. What a great trip. I plan to live vicariously through you, eat bowlfuls of this salsa and pretend my toes are in the sand :)
So happy to hear you had a great vacation. I too was worried about the hurricanes and then screwing your vacation. Glad to hear you had a great time. Welcome back. Share some pics on Friday :)
This salsa would be perfect over white fish. I wish I could watch the video but since I am at work (shhh dont tell anyone) I will watch it later at home. :)
You and me both! So glad the hurricane turned out to be nothing! Phew! And I’ll be sure to share some fun pics for Friday. And welcome home to you too friend! Loved looking at your pictures last week when you were in Mexico : )
I’m so glad you had a great time in Hawaii, Natalie! I went to Maui last year for my honeymoon and absolutely loved it. My goal is to go back for our five year anniversary…only four years left! :) This mango salsa looks amazing! I’ve been wanting to make a fruit kind, and this looks like the perfect recipe. And I love your video, too! If only I could chop as well as you!
We went to Maui for our honeymoon too! We were in Lahaina, was my favorite! You should definitely try and get back for your 5 year anniversary. Treat yourself! And thanks for your nice words about my chopping skills! Make me smile : )
So glad you’re ok! I love Hawaii so much, but would hve had doubts about getting on that flight! I’m glad it all worked out. This salso looks great, mango salsa is my favorite!
Okay, not to sound like stalker, but after reading your post about you guys heading off to Hawaii, the next day on the news I heard about the “imminent” hurricanes and immediately was worried about your safety! I swear I’m not a stalker. I swear!!! So happy to hear the weather cooperated! I’ve always wanted to travel there and will probably bug you for recommendations when I eventually do.
This salsa looks so fresh! Mangos. Papaya. OMG. I’ll eat the bowl. This would be a great condiment on pretty much anything.
PS. LOVE the video. Your jalapeno dicing skills are so much better than mine will ever be! Perfect little cubes.
Not a stalker at all! I had a ton of family and friends doing the same thing. It makes me so happy you were thinking of me! *virtual hugs*
Didn’t the news make it seem so scary? The night before I was definitely hesitant about the vacation, worried we would be cooped up inside with no power. Luckily the news had it WAY wrong.
You MUST go to Hawaii someday, especially Maui. When you go, I have a million recommendations for you!
Thanks for your compliments on the video! Can you tell I’m a little OCD about chopping things? Ha! Have a great rest of your day Allison!
Welcome back, Nat! It sounds like you had the BEST time in Maui and I’m super-glad that a hurricane didn’t blow you away! *phew*. ;) Now, the business of this salsa: Girl, I am seriously considering pulling out a bag of chips and running to the store to pick up all these ingredients so I can make this salsa NOW. I don’t care that it’s not even 7am yet—I need this in my life asap. Tropical fruit salsa is the BOMB. com. :) Pinned!
