What Makes This Recipe Great
I don’t know about you, but my family gathers for everything, and I’m always trying to figure out fun, simple snack options that everyone will love! Since it’s always the season of gathering and eating together, it’s a must to have a few easy recipes on hand to make for the masses! Enter Spicy Seasoned Pretzels! These are not your regular old pretzels, I promise!
Whether it’s a long car ride, a camping trip, a family vacation, or a game day– this is the perfect salty snack that is a great addition to any event. These “crack pretzels” are a family favorite! A great snack for a big group or even a cozy movie night. They taste similar to Chex Mix but even more addicting.
Coated in avocado oil or olive oil and seasoned with cayenne pepper, garlic salt, and lemon pepper, this spicy seasoned pretzel recipe is the perfect way to jazz up plain pretzels in no time.
Ingredient Notes
Such an easy recipe– These seasoned pretzels call for simple ingredients and a ziplock bag! That’s it! You can always adjust the seasonings to your liking– whether it’s a ranch packet or onion powder– you really can’t go wrong!
- Tiny Twist Pretzels: Pick whichever bag of pretzels is your favorite. To make these seasoned pretzels gluten-free, be sure to pick gluten-free pretzels. I prefer pretzel twists or pretzel sticks, but you can use any shape of pretzel you want.
- Garlic Salt: If you don’t have garlic salt, you can substitute 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 teaspoon salt.
- Cayenne Pepper: To control the spice level, increase or decrease the cayenne pepper. This recipe is for a milder pretzel.
- Lemon Pepper: Lemon pepper is pretty easy to find and such a staple to have on hand. It really jazzes up these spicy pretzels, not to mention chicken, mac & cheese (trust me!), and tons of other dishes.
- Avocado Oil: I prefer using avocado oil for my spicy pretzel recipe. I try and avoid melted butter, vegetable oil, and canola oil, but those would work as well—same quantity.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Pour the oil and spices into a Ziptop gallon size bag. Seal and shake to evenly combine the oil with spices.
- Add in the pretzels, seal up the Ziploc bag, and gently shake to coat the pretzels.
- Allow the pretzels to soak up the seasoned oil mixture for at least 6 hours, or ideally for 24 hours. Turn the bag to shake up pretzels every few hours. No need to bake them; the spicy pretzels will soak up all the oil.
- You can also spread the seasoned pretzels on a baking sheet and allow them to soak, but I prefer the Ziploc back so they’re already stored and make much less of a mess!
- Serve right out of the bag or in a large bowl, and enjoy this delicious treat!
The Ultimate Seasoning for Pretzels
I had never heard of making seasoning for pretzels before this recipe. Typically, I’ve just eaten hard pretzels on their own, and they’re good…but then all of a sudden, my mouth is dry, and I’m completely sick of them!
Lemon Pepper + Cayenne Pepper + Garlic Salt is truly the ultimate seasoning mixture for pretzels. Some people use dry Hidden Valley ranch dressing mix or dry ranch seasoning mix, but I like the hint of spice in this seasoned pretzel recipe.
It’s salty, tangy, and mildly spicy. A flavor-packed spicy pretzel with every single bite! The oil coating keeps them from feeling so dry, and I never get sick of them! Truly the perfect snack!
Expert Tips
- Spice Level: These spicy pretzels are mild. Feel free to use even less cayenne pepper if you don’t want them spicy at all. When making for my kids, I only use 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. You can also use more to taste if you want your spicy pretzel recipe spicier.
Storage Tips
- Store these seasoned pretzels in a Ziploc bag or airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
Recipe FAQs
Barely- honestly, no more than a bag of potato chips. One great thing about this spicy pretzel recipe is that the oil soaks into the pretzels, and they’re not greasy at all!
One serving of this recipe is about 17 pretzels and has 369 calories.
While this spicy pretzel recipe is great on its own, these actually are SO good dipped in plain cream cheese! When we go camping, we always have cream cheese on hand for bagels, and the creamy dip mixed with the spicy pretzel makes an amazing combination.

I just made these for our Christmas in July part tomorrow. We are having Margarita Slushes and these should go great with our theme. Thank you for sharing this! ☺
I hope everyone loved them! They are such a favorite for everyone I make them for!
made these 3 weeks ahead for favors at rehearsal dinner for grandson’s wedding. Put in clear bags and into monogrammed $Tree beer steins. BIG BIG BIG HIT! Making today for family reunion (have leftover bags). Putting tags on them. Best snack ever.
I am so glad everyone liked them Pauline! This made my day! My family loves these pretzels. They’re addictive. Thanks so much for letting me know you liked my recipe, you made my day!
Just made these! Nicole brought them along to Murphys and they were just toooo good! It’s going to be hard to wait six hours! Do you prefer them baked or sitting?
Yea! You made them! And so funny, because I just made a batch today for our weekend away at the beach. So good! If I have the time to wait, I just leave them in the bag. I’m lazy! But if I want the pretzels right away, I’ll bake them. They end up tasting the same. Hope you liked them! And baby girl liked them too, *wink*!
Wonderful flavor! I really do prefer this seasoning combo over the ranch dressing. Thanks for the wonderfully simple snack. Perfect for Martini Mondays!
Thanks Stacey! Aren’t they addictive. I love them and make them alllll the time. Oooh, and I want in on this Martini Monday’s!
BEST PRETZELS I’VE HAD…..EVER! Move over Chex Mix you have been replaced!! :-)

Did not like these pretzels. Didn’t have a good flavor/taste at all!!!!!
Sorry you didn’t like them : (
Wish I would’ve had this recipe before we went camping! We did make some with Cajun seasoning, oh so good! I’m gonna try your recipe today, thanks for sharing. ;)
Cajun Seasoning sounds good too! I have to try that. And these are the best snack for camping. I make them every time we go. Hope you love this recipe if you try it!
I just made these tonight, and I’m looking forward to see how they turn out tomorrow! I didn’t have Cayenne Pepper, so I used Chipotle Chili Pepper instead. It has a warm, smoky smell to it. I hope they turn out as well as your recipe does. :)
DELICIOUS!!! I put 2/3 cup of oil instead, and I didn’t have Cayenne, so I used Chipotle Chili Pepper. I also added one pouch of Hidden Valley Spicy Ranch mix. Oh so good! ;)
My next batch will be made with Old Bay Seasoning! ;)
I love that you used Chipotle Chili Pepper! I have some of that in my spice cabinet. I bet that gives it a great, smoky flavor. Yum! And Old Bay Seasoning sounds good too! The flavor opportunities are endless : )
SEINFELD!
Made these last night. Will be trying them in a couple of hours. Cannot wait
You guessed it Skyler! I love that show. We have every episode on DVD. Still watch them all the time. So glad you made these pretzels! They’re so delicious and addictive. Hope you enjoy them!
Oh my! These are so good!! I love the tang and the spice on them. They go great with a soda!! Thank you.
I’m so happy to hear that Yvonny! These are one of my favorite snacks, and a soda is a must to combat that slight spice. Thank you for letting me know you liked my recipe! You just made my day!
After letting them soak for 24hrs do you bake them in the oven still?
After soaking for 24 hours the pretzels should have absorbed all of the oil. I’ve never had to cook them after soaking. But if for some reason yours are still a little too “oily” after 24 hours, roast them at 200 degrees for about 10 minutes, or until the oil has cooked away to your liking. Hope you like the recipe when you try! And thanks for stopping by my food blog Melissa!
This sounds delicious what a fun way to spruce up pretzels at home. This flavor combo sounds amazing. Great snack to serve at a party!
Oh Em Gee! These are FIRE! Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome Elise! I’m so glad you like them. And they definitely have a bit of a kick to it. But play around with the amount of cayenne you add depending on if you want it spicier or less spicy. Have a great rest of your weekend!
These look yummy!! My Mom used to make something similar with a bag of oyster crackers, oil and a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing seasoning. They were delicious and addictive too!!
These are wonderful. I made them a while ago and lost the recipe. I’m so glad I found your site. They didn’t last a day with my husband and I eating them. I was looking for this recipe so I could make them again. Now I just need to go to the store to get the pretzels!
I just made my first batch of these. I say first because I’m sure I’ll make more when this batch is gone. I’m so excited, I hope I can wait 24 hours before diving into them! :-)
Hi Brandy! I’m sure you’ll be making lots more of these, because they are SO good! Thanks for your sweet comment, you made my day! (sorry for the late response, I’ve been in Hawaii, so fun!)
I just made this with a whole bag of pretzels but they are still really oily. They have been ‘marinating’ for at least 24 hours. How do I get rid of the extra oil? Maybe open the bag and try to let it evaporate?
These sound delicious but I don’t have any cayenne pepper and I’m not familiar with it to know what it tastes like in comparison to crushed red pepper. Do you think I could substitute crushed red pepper and still get the same kick? Thanks!
Cayenne pepper is a smoky spice made from ground ground peppers. You could definitely use red pepper flakes! However, you might want to grind the crushed red peppers in a grinder since they’re such big flakes. Otherwise you’re going to get some extra spicy bites! Or, you could just buy some cayenne pepper at the store! It’s just a few dollars and a great spice if you like a little kick! I love making cayenne mayo too for burgers : )
Hope you like the recipe if you try it! Have a great weekend!
